INTRODUCTION
The Congress of African Journalists (CAJ) Eminent Leaders and Achievers Award is our flagship platform to recognize Africans who are shaping the continent through courage, innovation, service, and integrity.
Since CAJ was registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission in Nigeria, we have affirmed that Africa’s progress rests on three pillars: free press, accountable leadership, and enterprising citizens.
This award shall on yearly basis celebrates the men and women who embody those pillars.
At a time when journalists face threats and citizens demand better governance, this award is CAJ’s way of saying: we see you, we honor you, and Africa needs more of you.
PURPOSE OF THE AWARD
The CAJ Eminent Leaders and Achievers Award was established to:
1. Recognize Excellence: Celebrate leaders, journalists, entrepreneurs, and institutions driving positive change in Africa.
2. Defend Press Freedom: Honor those who protect journalists and the right of citizens to information.
3. Promote Democratic Values: Spotlight "Idols of Democracy" who uphold rule of law, human rights, and citizen participation.
4. Encourage Entrepreneurship: Showcase African business leaders creating jobs, driving innovation, and solving local problems.
5. Inspire the Next Generation: Use these stories in CAJ International Magazine to mentor young Africans.

CAJ EMINENT LEADERS AND ACHIEVERS AWARD Nomination Process & Award Committees
NOMINATION PROCESS
The Congress of African Journalists [CAJ] is committed to a transparent, credible, and inclusive selection process. Nominations are open to the public, CAJ members, media organizations, civil society, and partner institutions across Africa and the diaspora.
Who Can Nominate:- CAJ National/Country/Regional Chapters and Correspondents- Media houses and press associations - Civil society organizations and NGOs- Academic institutions and professional bodies- Individuals with direct knowledge of the nominee’s work

2. Complete the Nomination Form: Provide nominee details, category, achievements, and supporting evidence.
3. Attach Supporting Documents: News clippings, photos, reports, testimonials, or portfolio of work.
4. Submit: Online via the portal or email to awards@cajintl.org or contact@cajintl.org
All valid nominations will be acknowledged and forwarded to the relevant regional committee for review.
SELECTION OF AWARD COMMITTEES & JURY ACROSS AFRICA
To ensure fairness, continental credibility, and expertise, CAJ will constitute a multi-stakeholder jury system drawn from media, governance, business, civil society, and academia.
1. CAJ Continental Award Jury - Final Panel This is the apex decision-making body. Composition:
15 Members- Political & Governance Leaders: 3 Former heads of state, ministers, or parliamentarians with proven democratic credentials-
Opinion Leaders:
3 Distinguished academics, authors, traditional rulers, and public intellectuals shaping African thought- Media Professionals:
4 Senior editors, media owners, and presidents of journalist unions across regions- Professional Experts:
3 Representatives from law, business/entrepreneurship, and civil society- CAJ Leadership: 2 Ex-officio - Chairman, CAJ Board of Trustees & Editor-in-Chief, CAJ International Magazine
Role: Reviews regional shortlists, conducts final validation, ensures balance across gender, region, and sector, and approves final honorees.
2. Five Regional Award Committees Each committee will be made up of 9-11 members to reflect the diversity of the region.Regional Representation:- Media Professionals:
3 - Editors, broadcasters, press union leaders- Political & Governance Actors:
2 - Former lawmakers, governors, or diplomats with integrity record - Opinion Leaders:
2 - Academics, faith leaders, traditional rulers, youth leaders- Professionals:
2 - Lawyers, entrepreneurs, NGO leaders, tech innovators- CAJ Regional Coordinator:
1 - Ex-officio, non-voting secretary Regional Headquarters:- West Africa Committee - Abuja, Nigeria - East Africa Committee - Nairobi, Kenya - Southern Africa Committee- Johannesburg, South Africa - Central Africa Committee - Yaoundé, Cameroon - North Africa Committee - Cairo, Egypt
Role of Regional Committees:
1. Screen and verify all nominations from their region
2. Conduct interviews and reference checks
3. Ensure nominees meet ethical and impact standards
4. Submit top 3 candidates per category to the Continental
Jury
PRINCIPLES GUIDING THE JURY- Independence: No juror with direct ties to a nominee will participate in that category- Diversity: Gender parity, youth, and representation of Anglophone, Francophone, and Lusophone Africa - Expertise: Political leaders bring governance insight, opinion leaders bring public trust, professionals bring technical rigor- Confidentiality: All deliberations are private to protect nominees and jurors- Merit-Based: Decisions are based on verifiable impact, integrity, and contribution to Africa.
ANNOUNCEMENT OF HONOREES
The final list of honorees will be published on www.cajintl.org and in CAJ International Magazine. All honorees will be profiled and their stories amplified across partner media through the International Media Cooperation Protocol. By bringing together politicians, opinion leaders, and professionals with journalists, CAJ ensures that the Eminent Leaders and Achievers Award reflects the full spectrum of African leadership.
